The world will consistently try to define you by your track record, your failures, and the labels that have followed you through life. But God operates from an entirely different set of principles. The moment you receive Jesus as your Saviour; you are born again! You are a new creature in God’s family with a new spiritual identity that past failures have no power to erase (2 Corinthians 5:17).
Now that your identity is found in Christ, God sees you as righteous – not because of your works, but because of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on your behalf (2 Corinthians 5:21). This is not a small theological point; it is the very foundation of daily Christian living. You cannot walk in victory whilst you are still allowing your past to speak louder than God’s Word over your life.
You are a three-part being: spirit, soul, and body. Your spirit came alive at the moment of salvation and became the dwelling place of God’s Holy Spirit. However, your soul, which is made up of your mind, will and emotions, and your body still require training to experience the full reality of this new identity in Christ. This is precisely why the renewal of the mind is not optional – it is the ongoing process through which your right-standing with God begins to transform the way you think, speak, and live.
Where you continually look will determine what you become. The instruction of Hebrews 12:2 – to fix your eyes on Jesus – is not merely a devotional encouragement, it is a strategic directive for spiritual growth. Daily consistency in feeding your faith through God’s Word keeps your attitude and perspective aligned with who He says you are, even when challenges in finances, health, and spiritual opposition press hard against you (Romans 10:17).
Immersed in Self
When you take your eyes off Jesus, you become sin-conscious – constantly aware of your mistakes, flaws and past sins. When your attention is focused on what you did, or how well you think you’re performing, the focus is inward and will shape how you see yourself and your relationship with God.
The message of the gospel is not just that you are forgiven; it’s that you’ve been made new. You became a new creation when you received Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:17). Your past no longer defines you, and your sins are no longer counted against you. God made you righteous through Jesus, not because of your performance, but because of His grace. That means you are accepted, forgiven, and in right-standing with Him. You see yourself the way God sees you: forgiven, accepted and righteous. Your confidence is now rooted in His grace instead of your performance.
Being Christ-conscious doesn’t mean you never make mistakes. Everyone does. It means you don’t stay stuck in them. When you do miss it, you’re quick to turn back to God, receive His forgiveness, and move forward. When you live this way, you move from guilt to confidence, from striving to rest, and from feeling distant from God to walking closely with Him. You are not trying to become worthy; you already are, because of Jesus.
Restoration Is God’s Nature
God’s plan has always been redemption and restoration – not replacement. You are never too far gone for God to restore what was lost, and no past is too painful, too unjust, or too broken for Him to redeem and turn into purpose. The God who restores families, relationships, vision, calling and identity is the same God Who is present in your situation right now.
Restoration begins when you arrive at the place of total dependence on God. When you surrender fully to Him, He takes your greatest failure and uses it to shape your future calling, developing in you a level of compassion, empathy, and humility that could not have grown any other way. Colossians 3:7-10 captures this beautifully – God turns failures into testimony when you surrender to Him, and the very things that once defined your defeat become the foundation of your purpose.
When your identity is restored in Christ, your past loses its authority to define your future (2 Corinthians 5:17). This is not a gradual softening of the damage you have experienced – it is a complete repositioning of who you are in relation to what happened to you. God rarely restores everything at once because he leads you step by step and gives you purpose before He gives you full clarity. Obedience always comes before complete understanding, and learning to hear God’s voice in small daily decisions is what builds the confidence you need to trust Him in bigger ones.
Know His Voice
Jesus Himself said that His sheep know His voice (John 10:27). The more you practice bringing God into the ordinary decisions of your day, the more clearly you will recognize His direction when the stakes are high. Peace is consistently the indicator of God’s direction – when you hold two options before the Lord and speak them aloud, the choice that carries peace in your spirit is usually the one He is leading you towards.
Your call is clear and it is purposeful: know who are you are in Jesus, walk in the love and right-standing He has given you, allow Him to restore what your past has damaged, and move forward with confidence in who God’s Word says you are.
