4 Tips for Keeping Your Cool when Family Visits
The holidays are coming and your family is planning a visit. As much as you love them, the stress of the season can be a little much. How can you keep your cool when family visits? Here are four tips for helping you do just that.
- When Family Comes to Visit, Trust in the Word
Jesus said, “But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted!” (John 15:7). Even before your family arrives, begin meditating on scripture. Find scriptures to meditate on, or read 5 Scriptures to Stand on When Family Visits. Let peace, truth and love rule in your heart even before your doorbell rings.
- When Family Visits, Focus on the Lord
“Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty” (Psalm 91:1). If you want to enjoy God’s protection—and yes, you might need emotional protection from those nearest and dearest to you—commit to focusing on the Lord. Spend time each morning and even right before bed spending time with the Lord. Read His Word and pray, allowing Him to adjust your thoughts and bring you peace.
- When Family Comes to Visit, Refuse to be Angry
Ephesians 4:26 says, “And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, because anger gives a foothold to the devil. Protect your peace of mind by refusing to succumb to anger or strife. When that family member tries to push your buttons with comments and attitudes, walk away, take a breath and praise God for them.
- When Family Comes to Visit, Receive God’s Grace
This is the day of grace and mercy, and you can call upon the Lord in every situation. In fact, He wants you to! If you find yourself responding unkindly or letting stress get the best of you, simply slip away for a few minutes, get quiet before the Lord and receive the grace and forgiveness He offers.
Let this family visit be the best one ever. Put these tips into practice. Begin praying about this upcoming visit in faith, believing that God is going to be with you every step of the way! Prepare for the visit by reading and thinking about God’s Word.
Second Thessalonians 3:16 says, “Now may the Lord of peace himself give you his peace at all times and in every situation. The Lord be with you all.” Let this be your promise that God will help you keep your cool during this upcoming family visit…and beyond!
