Life can sometimes feel like a storm, with challenges that seem insurmountable, but goodness is the will of God. In these moments, we may wonder where God is and why we face such trials. Many hold the misconception that God allows difficulties to teach us lessons or strengthen our faith. However, a deeper look at Scripture reveals the truth: God is a loving Father Who does not bring harm but offers hope, restoration, and victory through Jesus Christ.
God’s Character: The Truth About His Nature
To understand God’s role in our trials, we must first grasp His unchanging character. The Bible reveals God as a compassionate and loving Father. Psalm 103:8 declares, “The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love” (ESV). While the Old Testament contains instances of judgment, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ marked a transformative shift. Through Jesus, God established a new covenant, offering grace and forgiveness instead of wrath.
John 10:10 highlights the contrast between God’s intentions and the enemy’s schemes: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.” Trials and tragedies do not originate from God but from living in a fallen world where sin and its consequences persist (Romans 5:12).
God’s Will: Goodness, Not Suffering
The notion that God uses suffering to strengthen our faith misrepresents His will. Romans 8:28 states, “We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” This does not imply that God causes hardships but rather that He redeems situations, bringing beauty from ashes (Isaiah 61:3).
It is not God’s will for His children to suffer from sickness, lack, or tragedy. These afflictions are byproducts of the brokenness in our world. Jesus made it clear: “In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33, NIV). Through His victory, we have the authority to overcome adversity by faith and the Word of God (Revelation 12:11).
God’s Presence in Trials
Where is God when we face difficulties? He is right there with us. Psalm 91:15 assures us, “He will call on Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him.” God does not abandon us but walks through every storm by our side.
Consider the example of the disciples in the storm on the Sea of Galilee (Mark 4:35-41). When fear overwhelmed them, Jesus calmed the storm, demonstrating His power and presence. Similarly, He offers peace and deliverance in the midst of our troubles.
Rejecting the Lie: Trials Are Not God’s Punishment
It is crucial to dismantle the belief that God uses trials as punishment or lessons. This perspective distorts His nature and undermines the work of the Cross. Jesus bore the full weight of sin and judgment so that we might live in freedom and grace (2 Corinthians 5:21).
Instead of passively accepting hardship, believers are called to stand in faith, resist the enemy, and declare God’s promises. As James 4:7 instructs, “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
Walking in God’s Promises
To navigate challenging times, we must actively embrace God’s promises. Psalm 91 serves as a blueprint for protection and peace, reminding us of His covenant to guard and deliver us. Build your spiritual fortress by speaking His Word, anointing your home, and pleading the blood of Jesus over your life (Isaiah 55:11, Psalm 91:10).
Additionally, maintain a posture of worship and gratitude. These acts create an atmosphere where God’s presence dwells, bringing clarity, strength, and supernatural intervention.
A Loving God, Not a Vengeful One
The Cross changed everything. It sealed God’s character as a loving Father and eliminated any notion of Him as vengeful or punitive. In every trial, He is present, working all things for your good and equipping you to overcome through His Word, His Spirit, and His promises. Reject the lies of the enemy and embrace the truth of God’s unchanging love. You are never alone, and victory is always within reach through Christ Jesus.
